Step 3: Seal Entry Points

Once you have identified entry points, seal them. The right material depends on the location and gap size.

Caulk and Foam

Polyurethane foam sealant (such as Great Stuff) is effective for sealing gaps around pipes, conduit, and irregular openings. It expands to fill the gap and is durable once cured. Use it for gaps up to about 3 inches.

Exterior-grade caulk is appropriate for smaller gaps along seams, around window frames, and where different materials meet. Use a paintable, weatherproof formulation.

Important: Foam and caulk alone are not appropriate for large gaps or areas subject to significant movement or moisture. Use hardware cloth or metal flashing for structural gaps.

Hardware Cloth

1/4-inch hardware cloth (galvanized welded wire mesh) is the standard material for sealing vents, larger gaps, and areas where a physical barrier is needed. It is durable, rodent-proof, and snake-proof.

Use it to:

  • Replace damaged vent screens
  • Cover gaps in soffit vents
  • Seal large gaps around foundation penetrations
  • Cover crawlspace vents that lack screens

Secure hardware cloth with screws and washers or construction staples, and seal the edges with caulk to prevent gaps at the perimeter.

Door Sweeps

Replace worn door sweeps on all exterior doors. Automatic door bottoms (which rise when the door opens and drop when it closes) provide better sealing than standard brush sweeps.

Metal Flashing

For gaps along the foundation, between the foundation and siding, or at the base of wood-framed walls, metal flashing provides a durable, snake-proof barrier. Seal the top edge with caulk and secure the bottom edge to the foundation.

Step 4: Snake Fencing (For High-Risk Properties)

For properties with persistent snake pressure — particularly those adjacent to natural areas, creek corridors, or wooded lots — snake exclusion fencing provides an additional layer of protection.

Effective snake fencing uses 1/4-inch hardware cloth installed at a slight outward angle, buried 6 inches below grade to prevent burrowing, and extending 24–30 inches above grade. The outward angle prevents snakes from climbing over.

Snake fencing is most effective when it encloses a specific area (a play area, a pool deck, a garden) rather than the entire property perimeter. A complete perimeter fence for a typical residential lot is expensive and requires careful installation to be effective.

What Does Not Work

Save your money on these:

Mothballs: Naphthalene (the active ingredient in mothballs) has no proven effect on snake behavior. It is also toxic to pets and children and is not registered as a snake repellent by the EPA.

Sulfur: Powdered sulfur is widely sold as a snake repellent. There is no scientific evidence it deters snakes, and it can irritate skin and respiratory systems.

Ultrasonic devices: No peer-reviewed research supports the claim that ultrasonic devices deter snakes. Snakes do not have external ears and are largely insensitive to airborne sound.

Cedar chips: Sometimes recommended as a snake deterrent. No evidence supports this claim.

Cinnamon oil, clove oil, and other essential oils: Marketed as natural snake repellents. No scientific evidence of effectiveness.

The only proven snake deterrents are physical exclusion (sealing entry points), habitat modification (removing attractants), and rodent control (eliminating the food source).
